Sequels often feel like a lazy cash grab, devoid of the originality and charm that made the original films so beloved. It seems that studios are more interested in riding the coattails of past successes than in creating something new and innovative. The disappointment of seeing beloved characters and stories stretched thin in a forced attempt to recapture former glory is all too common. However, there are rare exceptions that defy this trend, igniting excitement and anticipation.
One such exception is the idea of a Happy Gilmore 2.
Despite my general disdain for sequels, the prospect of revisiting the world of Happy Gilmore has me foaming at the mouth. The original movie, with its perfect blend of humor, heart, and memorable characters, left an indelible mark on comedy and sports film fans alike. But more importantly, I found out today that Netflix announced Kyle Newacheck will be directing the much-anticipated sequel. This exciting news comes as Happy Gilmore 2 is set to begin filming in September 2024 .
Meet Kyle Newacheck: The Ace in the Hole for this Sequel
Kyle Newacheck, most known for his work on the hit series “Workaholics,” brings a fresh and innovative perspective to the table. His unique style and comedic timing make him an ideal fit for a film that blends humor and heart in a way only Adam Sandler’s projects can. Having worked with Sandler before, Newacheck’s familiarity with the actor’s comedic sensibilities ensures that the sequel will retain the charm of the original while introducing new elements to keep audiences entertained. Newacheck’s impressive career extends beyond “Workaholics.” He has also directed several seasons of the critically acclaimed and recently Emmy-nominated series “What We Do in the Shadows” on FX, showcasing his versatility and skill in various comedic genres.
My Personal Connection with Kyle
I have been a fan of Kyle since my own early YouTube days — I discovered his old YouTube channel, Mail Order Comedy, while I myself was trying to crack the code on getting YouTube famous in 2009. Since then, I’ve had the fortune of actually crossing paths with him since his days directing “Workaholics.”
Our online “friendship” began in an unconventional way: I entered a music video contest he was running for his documentary featuring mutual friend, Thomas Kellogg, and my entry was late, yet he still took the time to acknowledge my work and offer support. At one point, we followed each other on social media and started lightly engaging with each other online.
Over the years, Kyle has acknowledged some of my work and he even unwillingly became a character in my never released documentary, Falling Together: The Rise and Fall of Upside Down Creative Media. At one point, he interviewed me on his Wonk Podcast and then also mentioned me on his current podcast, This Is Important.
Last year, while on tour, I finally got to meet him in person and sit down for coffee and conversation while he was on tour in Atlanta. I later got to meet him and “the boys” in Texas, which was an absolute dream come true. Kyle’s dedication to his craft and genuine, authentic nature have always inspired me, and I have no doubt that he is the right person to helm this epic sequel.
Fore! Anticipation for Happy Gilmore 2
With Adam Sandler and Kyle Newacheck connected on this project, I have no doubt that “Happy Gilmore 2” promises to bring back the beloved characters and outrageous humor that made the original a cult classic. With Newacheck at the helm, fans can look forward to a film that honors the spirit of the first movie while pushing the boundaries of comedy. It’s going to be a wild ride and I can only speculate the mayhem that will ensue on the silver screen.
As production gears up to start this September, anticipation is building. The combination of Adam Sandler’s comedic genius and Kyle Newacheck’s directorial prowess sets the stage for a sequel that could very well become a new classic in its own right. “Happy Gilmore 2” is shaping up to be one of the most exciting comedy releases in recent years, and I, for one, can’t wait to see what Kyle and the team have in store.
Kyle Newacheck’s selection as director is not just a great choice; it’s a testament to his talent and vision. His journey from “Workaholics” to “Happy Gilmore 2” is a story of dedication, creativity, and a love for making people laugh. Here’s to a fantastic sequel and to Kyle Newacheck, the perfect man for the job.
